“Old barns have been an identifying feature of the NYS landscape linking us to our historic agricultural heritage. Sadly, many are disappearing due to urban development, neglect and decay; this is true in our township of Ulysses. Forty-five years ago, I renovated the family’s Nineteenth-century English style barn into a home and studio. Years later I wrote and illustrated “The Barn Story” a barn-shaped, graphic memoir about that adventure. Although the book tells of my experience, I hoped it would inspire others, particularly women, to think about what they can achieve given vision and determination. To this day, the old post-and-beam structure offers me and my partner a great place to live while preserving an architectural structure that links us to our rural heritage.”
